Land Rover were selling these as an official accessory for around £450. I guess they didn't sell a lot as large numbers were dumped on the discount retailers. I paid under a £100 for mine, and at that price it was a bargain.

Made by Khyam the day tent folds up kind of like a big umbrella into a not-very-compact bag. It's all one piece so goes up quickly if it's still. If it's windy then it takes a while to peg all the guy ropes. The walls off solid, solid with windows, and mesh. One wall is solid with an elasticated surround designed to 'dock' to the back of your Land Rover (or Jeep in my case). They did an adapter tunnel to get a perfect fit and a bit more room tailored to each Land Rover model but it fits well enough without it on the Jeep.

It's a day tent, so it's not ment for sleeping in. It does make a great cooking area or shelter from the elements when used in conjunction with a day tent.

If you can find one cheap, get it.

Is that because most modern Land Rover drivers wouldn't dream of actually going camping in a muddy field?

They're bought for the school run aren't they? :)

Sorry, no. They don't make them anymore but they still turn up on ebay.
